Happy Birthday to Muhammed Ali.

Honestly - no puns, no irony from me.

  • I hope you don't mind me putting my six penny worth in here, but I loathe boxing with a passion. I am particularly puzzled that black people don't protest over this sport. I see the sport as a human form of bear baiting or dog fighting and the fact that boxing has a high level of black participants historically when there were few black sports people in the limelight makes me feel queasy. You could argue it was a way out of the ghetto or you could see it as black people knocking the shit out of each other for the entertainment of the white folks. Or am I being too negative.

Actually, I can't stand boxing anyway. I can't see why it's sporting to hurt someone else and I can't understand why anybody enjoys it. It's weird.

I did love the film Raging Bull precisely because it highlighted the savagery of the whole thing. Well it did for me.

  • ahhh.... madmary. I can't disagree with anything you're saying....

yet I also love (watching) boxing.

I should blog about this. It might involve trying to explain a sport where abilty and workrate has such focus but... I won't be able to convince anyone of anything.

    hmmm..... more anon

    thanks for the comment!!

oh btw totally agree about raging bull. (good name for the blog on boxing as it will mainly be bull...)

  • Hi! I also tried to post a la Appy, but don't think it came through.

Just giving you a quick wave and hoping you're giving Spanish a chance so you can have an even better time in Seville.

  • was that you Appy? If so - hello!!

didn't know if you'd posted on my much earlier (November? February? March?) blogs about Spain and Guatemala.

Anyway, you can post and click "other" (still have to type the letters) and leave your 'name' (its how I had to post as "Whisht" earlier when replying to madmary!!)

  • Here I am having another go -- anonymously this time (I was trying "other" last night -- and no that anonymous one from 3.59pm wasn't me.

    Aperitif, x.

  • Ooooh! It worked!!!

Now I have to try to remember what I said last night -- something about not liking boxing either, but appreciating Ali for the amazing character that he is (was). He was the first to do the "I am the greatest" thing that all of the wannabees seem to do now, and he was by far the most convincing. Bet the likes of Robbie Williams wish they had half his charisma...

    A, x.
